Serious Weather: Recent work by Alice George
Heartwood Center, 1818 Dempster St., Evanston, IL 60201
I am humbled by this opportunity to exhibit a wide range of my recent work here at Heartwood, a place that has become home. I am delighted to be joined by three sangha members—our meditation community here at Heartwood is rich in artists! Each of them is displaying selected works in the hallways near the west entrance: Corinne Peterson (ceramics), Alicja Pulit (paintings), and Julie Fleps (fiber and textiles).
I hope that my artworks—all created within the past two years or so—share a bit of my journey:
an atheist discovering Buddhism
a poet exploring silence
a daughter tending then sitting vigil with her dying mother
a sun-lover delighting in the magic of cyanotypes
a restless storyteller channeling my father’s love of boats
a lake-swimmer in love with weather, and surf and reflection
I hope that by leaving signs of passage in my work—the charcoal gesture, the thick paint, the ash, the drip—I share some of the focused physical joy I experience when making. Imagine a studio full of music and mess. Imagine the humming of color.
Opening Reception November 17, 3-5, with refreshments and an artists talk at 4.
Open Hours for First Saturday, December 7, 1-3.
