I seem to be...
(grades 3-8)

Starting with a discussion of 'you can't judge a book by its cover," students are guided to think about and discuss the differences between appearance and reality. They make lists of adjectives they think describe them, while also thinking about how others perceive them. Some kids initially have trouble with the idea, insisting everyone has the right idea about them! I encourage students to have fun with this, and some kids run with it...writing lines like "I seem to be a person, but really I'm a hologram, etc." This is a great format for practicing similes and metaphors.
